84th Academy Awards: The Best Picture Nominees

image

Who will win: The Artist

There is no way around it, this movie is solid. It’s an node to old,old Hollywood hay day of silent  films while taking a fresh approach on an forever told story of when Hollywood went sound. I type this an I am watching ‘Singing in the Rain’ another film that tackle the moment in time when films went from silent to sound. French actor Jean Dujardin scored a Best Actor nod from this and it is well deserved. In the days of 3d movies The Artist did a fantastic job of holding on to you attention and even forgetting that the film is silent.  If The Artist wins it will be the silent film to score Best Picture in 83 years.

Who deserves to Win: The Help

I honestly wasn’t sure about The Help before I saw it last year, but if The Artist wasn’t nominated this would be the sure winner tonight. The cast is amazing and so in sync with each other and as every has said this entire award season Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer were the movie. It’s such a movie that you can not, not see. It’s out on DVD go rent, buy it, stream just go see it. NOW.

Runner Up: The Descendants

Honorable Mention: Midnight in Paris

Cowboys and Aliens, Smurfs Neck and Neck at Weekend Box Office

Box Office shake up for second weekend in a row as Cowboys and Aliens and The Smurfs battle for #1

Box Office predictors who thought Cowboys and Aliens would take the weekend were in for a  surprise as some movie goers opted to see the movie staring the little blue people from your childhood instead giving ‘Cowboys’ come competition. Final numbers will be out tomorrow but currently both studios Universal and Sony are claiming the number one spot. This is the second weekend in a row where box office predictions have turned out wrong. Last weekend Captain America was up against Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II and it was predicted that Potter would reign for a second weekend when in the end Captain America came out victorious.

Directors Todd Philips and Neil Burger Eye New Projects

Todd Philips has optioned the rights to ‘Arms and Dudes’ based on an aritcle in the March 2011 edition of Rollin Stone about two stoners who became major weapon dealers. He is also set to direct and produce the film.

Story, which appeared in the March 31, 2011 issue of Rolling Stone, chronicled the tale of David Packouz and Efraim Diveroli, who won a $300 million contract from the Pentagon to arm America’s allies in Afghanistan. Duo made 85 deliveries of munitions to Afghanistan worth more than $66 million before their arms-dealing careers were cut short when federal agents raided their Miami Beach offices in Aug. 2007, culminating in 71 counts of fraud. Variety

Neil Burger is eyeing to direct ‘Bonnie and Clyde’ based on the book ‘Go Down Together: The True Untold Story of Bonnie and Clyde’ by Jeff Guinn. The film will be financed by Marrissa McMahon daughter of WWE owner Vince McMahon.

Guinn is a journalist whose book chronicles two of America’s legendary outlaws, Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker, as the young lovers rob banks throughout the Depression-era South, leaving at least seven bodies in their wake. Variety

Jennifer Aniston Puts On Her Director and Producer Hats with Alicia Keys,Demi Moore and Patty Jenkins

All four ladies are teaming up with Lifetime to direct 5 short films which will be mearged into an anthology called Project Five for the network. The project will be about the impact breast cancer has on people’s lives.  A fifth female director hasn’t been announced yet. Jennifer Aniston is also serving as one of the executive producers along with Marta Kauffman,Paula Wagner,Kevin Chinoy, Kristin Hahn and Francesca Silvestri.

“Our hope with Project Five is to entertain, inform and inspire dialogue, research and prevention. Otherwise, our goals are small,” Aniston said in a statement. “We want these films to move people and empower those affected by breast cancer to stand tall through this challenge, which impacts ALL of our lives, no matter who we are.” Hollywood Reporter

“I’m a big fan of this amazing group of powerful and creative women, and we are thrilled to be working with them on Project Five,” said Dubuc. “It’s an awesome feeling to be able to give them such a strong platform to do what they do best – entertain and tell great stories – so that we all educate viewers about breast cancer through these five films of courage, love and hope.”

“We are proud to be partnering with this amazing creative team on a project of such importance and impact for women,” said Helen Verno, executive vice president of movies and miniseries, Sony Pictures Television. TV By Numbers

I am interested in Alicia Keys involvement from the film-making aspect since she is a singer first. However, over the years she has done a little bit of acting here and there. I thought she was great in 2008’s “The Secret Life of Bees”. And the executive producers have some great films under their belts so the project will mostly likely be very well done in the end. The subject is something that does affect everyone’s life directly or indirectly.
